Testing for Lyme Disease - USMLE Review - Med Live Podcast -- Lyme disease is an infection caused by the Borrelia bacteria, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks. The most common symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of the body and cause more severe symptoms, such as joint pain, neurological problems, and heart problems.
There are several tests that can be used to diagnose Lyme disease. The most common test is a blood test, which looks for antibodies to the Borrelia bacteria. It is important to note that it can take several weeks for the body to produce enough antibodies for the test to be positive, so a negative test does not necessarily mean that you do not have the disease.
