Glen Huntly Tram Square: The Final Hour

Описание: During the rainy night on 5th May 2023, the Glen Huntly Tram Square closed to traffic for the final time after 110 years of faithful service. Served by the Frankston Line and Route 67 Trams, in this video we see various trains and trams passing through the tram square during the final hour of operations.

Located in Melbourne's inner southeast, the nearby Glen Huntly station was originally opened on 19th December 1881 as Glen Huntly Road when the railway line known as Frankston Line today was extended. In 1913, a tram line was opened between Elsternwick and Carnegie (part of today's 67 Melbourne Uni - Carnegie route), which led to the tram square being built in Glen Huntly.

So...what exactly is a tram square? These are level crossings where 1500-volt DC railway tracks intersect with 600-volt DC tram tracks. They are controlled by a signal box, which activates the level crossing, controls the signals and traffic lights, and changes the voltage of the overhead wires as required.

While tram squares are a unique sight in Melbourne, with only three existing in Melbourne at the time of filming, they severely impact the nearby traffic volume in recent years, similar to other level crossings around Melbourne and Victoria. Therefore, it was planned for the railway line to be grade separated and lowered into a trench and have the station rebuilt as a whole as part of the LXRA project. With Frankston trains running until early June, it will be opened in late August after a construction blitz.
