Jose Maria "Joma" Sison is best known as the founding chairman of the reestablished Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in 1969. The Party was reestablished at a time that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos was intensifying state tyranny and oppression in the country. The CPP organized the New People's Army (NPA) which under the direction of the CPP has since been waging a people's war for national and social liberation in the country.
