A historic agreement has been reached in Balochistan to safeguard the health of prisoners and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Under the vision of Chief Minister Balochistan, Mir Sarfraz Khan Bugti, and on the directives of Health Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Balochistan Health Department and the Prisons Department under the supervision of Health Secretary Mujeeb-ur-Rehman.
The MoU was signed by Director General Health Services Balochistan, Dr. Ameen Khan Mandokhail, and Inspector General Prisons Balochistan, Captain (R) Abdul Saeed Naveed. On this occasion, Project Manager of the Provincial TB Control Program Dr. Irfan Ahmed and Deputy IG Prisons Ziaullah Tareen were present as witnesses.
Also in attendance were Dr. Ababakar Baloch, Coordinator of Balochistan Health Management Information System, Dr. Sireen Nosherwani, Provincial Coordinator of the Balochistan AIDS Control Program, Dr. Ameer Ali Bugti, Provincial Coordinator of the Hepatitis Program, Dr. Shah Koh Mengal, Director of the Balochistan Health Card Program, along with other departmental officials.
Under this MoU, all prisons in the province will ensure screening, diagnosis, and free treatment of TB, Hepatitis, and HIV. Regular health screenings will be mandatory at the time of admission and at set intervals, and affected inmates will be provided free treatment under respective health programs. Furthermore, jail medical staff will receive training, and awareness campaigns will be launched as part of an integrated disease prevention strategy.
This initiative will not only enable timely diagnosis and treatment of diseases among inmates but will also help prevent outbreaks, thereby strengthening the province’s overall healthcare system.
