The first commercially successful electrical audio device was the telephone. In 1877, a young Elisha Gray filed a patent for a liquid microphone design that used the telephone transmitter as its user interface. Because telephones had been on the market for less than 15 years at this point, telephonic audio engineers were still struggling to find the best way to get clear sound.

How it all began. On December 24th, 1907, an 8 year old boy by the name of George Beauchamp was given a Christmas gift that kicked off his lifelong fascination with guitars and music; a harmonica. As Beauchamp got older he became aware of the guitar; which had quickly become more and more popular in the public eye. It was around this time that Beauchamp met a man by the name of Adolph Rickenbacker, who had been building guitars in Los Angeles since 1896.

After a little persuasion, Mr.Rickenbacher agreed to make an electric guitar for young George; which he did with great success. Not only did this guitar amplify, but it was also electrified; and so the idea for what would become known as an amplifier had been born.
