POSITION: MOMENT BEGETS CHANGE

profile
As GARIS attains more than 25 years of practice, they choose not to look back and celebrate past achievements, but to learn from them and plan the future ahead. The world is changing at an ever-increasing pace. Citizens of the world are realising that everyone has a unique role in sowing the seeds of the future of the global community. GARIS planners, urban designers, architects and designers, realise every seed conceived in the built environment can potentially have a global impact in this well-connected world. In their job, they contribute to the expansion of the world map, provide shelter, shape space, influence life through space, influence experience through form and mould perception. Through the usage by people, this ultimately leads to formation of consciousness and common practice in the community - these days, the world is indeed a community.
To them sustainability is fundamentally an attitude that can turn into a habit that leads to a norm and ultimately becomes a cultural practice. Historically, traditional communities were sustainable in their lifestyle out of necessity in a low-tech world, as it was imbued in the culture then. Based on this, GARIS philosophies their sustainable design and social initiatives from the lowest level and smallest denominations, using basic and low-tech principles to engage with users by creating awareness that leads to practice. They believe that this approach holds a greater impact than a singular technologically injected green building that is often a showcase of an agenda. They prefer to work with people as they are not just their ultimate clients, but the future stakeholders of the environment and the community at large.
As a tool of practice, using the concept of scale to conceive and shape something in a smaller ratio to represent and implement on a much larger context, they aspire to “roll-out” the scale rule and lines (‘garis’ in Malay language) to express time in space, as well as to represent the potential influence and multiplication factor of their efforts in greater scale and beyond measure.. “to scale new heights, space and dimensions”.
