Mapping, Sensing, Hacking describes three dominant
modes of governance in the Anthropocene
(Chandler, 2018). It also describes three strategic
ways that contemporary artists engage with public
space today. This session will draw out a discussion
with artists, curators and academics on the use (and
misuse) of public spaces within the environmental
crisis, through an elaboration on these three
concepts. Focusing on the development of the
Research Garden at Goldsmiths College, Dr. Ros Gray
will elaborate on her recent work, mapping the
coloniality of plants. Reflecting on the upcoming
programme for the 17th Momenta Biennale, curator
Stefanie Hessler will explore the role of sensing in
public art, and its capacity to unsettle the divide
between nature and its representation. Finally, Alex
Braidwood will elaborate on his acoustic
interventionist practices and how they hack the
surrounding environment to highlight issues of
sustainability.
