But those changes will also do your equipment good in the long run by running those sensitive Tier 4 engines in a way that increases their longevity, reduces foul-ups with the aftertreatment systems and protects one of your most valuable assets.

As contractors are well aware, diesel prices per gallon have skyrocketed this year and show no signs of coming down anytime soon.

The current national average for a gallon of on-highway diesel, which includes federal and state taxes, is $5.70 as of June 6, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That’s a $2.42-per-gallon increase over a year ago. And if you’re in the Northeast or in California, that average per-gallon price is up over $6. (California shows the highest, according to EIA, at $6.83 per gallon.)

Though off-road diesel is exempt from the federal 24.4-cent per-gallon sales tax, as well as state fuel taxes, it’s still a major rising expense. Enough so, that it might be worth making some operating changes that could save you thousands in the long run.
