Steve Soper tests the 1994 season BMW E36 318i at Kyalami ahead of the first races of the season. At this point the BMW's would carry a 100kg weight penalty until mid-year, when the 318i Motorsport was homologated for it's aerodynamic aids, when the weight penalty was also reduced. The 318i Motorsport was homologated (2500 units) as BMW's answer to the Alfa Romeo 155 Silverstone (Formula in some countries) which dominated in the BTCC up to that point.
