Initially sympathetic to the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH), which posited that UFOs were spacecraft from other planets, he soon became disillusioned. By 1967, Keel had rejected the ETH, arguing instead that UFO encounters were more likely to involve a form of non-human intelligence that manipulated human perception and could induce hallucinatory experiences.

Keel introduced several enduring concepts in ufology. He was among the first to popularize the term Men in Black (MIB), referring to mysterious agents who allegedly threatened UFO witnesses into silence. He also advanced the idea of ultraterrestrials—entities not from other planets, but from other dimensions or realities, capable of manifesting in myriad forms. Keel’s superspectrum theory proposed that paranormal events stemmed from a broad range of unseen energies existing outside the limits of human perception. According to Keel, these forces had historically influenced human culture by appearing as fairies, demons, or extraterrestrials depending on the era’s prevailing beliefs.

His best-known work, The Mothman Prophecies (1975), documents his investigation into reports of a winged creature in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Keel connected these sightings to a series of paranormal occurrences that culminated in the tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge in December 1967.

Keel’s writing style, often compared to that of Charles Fort, blended firsthand reporting with speculative theorizing, dark humor, and skepticism toward both government and mainstream science. Though an avowed atheist, Keel believed in what he called a “control system”—a hidden mechanism through which non-human intelligences manipulated humanity over the centuries. He described the ultraterrestrial hypothesis more as a “literary device” than a concrete theory, underscoring his identity as a writer foremost.

Despite facing criticism from skeptics and ufologists alike for his willingness to entertain hoaxes or unverified claims, Keel's originality and fearless approach earned him a dedicated readership. His work continues to influence fringe science, conspiracy culture, and paranormal literature. Keel died in New York City in 2009 at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most iconoclastic and imaginative voices in 20th-century anomalistics.
