A look at the brand new Bike & Ride facility at College Park Station on Metro's Green Line.
TEXT OF THIS VIDEO:
My name is Justin and I work at Metro's Office of Long Range Planning.
And I'm standing here at College Park-University of Maryland station on the Green Line in front of Metro's first secure bicycle parking facility called a Bike & Ride.
We built this facility to provide customers with a secure place to park their bike. We've heard from our customers through outreach that one thing that prevents them from accessing Metrorail stations by bike is they're looking for a place to leave their bike during the day that's safe and secure. So, we built this facility that somewhere in between an open air bicycle rack that you'll see at almost every Metrorail station and a standard reserved locker. When you arrive at the station, put your bike link card in the kiosk, press the button to start the rental, take the card out to open the door and you're in. Lock your bike up to any one of the bike racks inside. Just like you would any other bike rack, use a U-lock. Grab your things, and you're on your way.
When you come into the facility, you'll notice we've installed two double stacked bike racks in either corner of the facility. We wanted to try out these bike racks to see how they work and see how customers like them. We do have more bike and rides planned at other stations. Two are next year at Vienna station, at King Street station and at least one per year for every jurisdiction for the next few years. In other situations, we don't have as much space as we have here at College Park so we wanted to see whether we could provide more bikes parking capacity up when we can't go out. So, try out these bike racks and let us know what you think compared to a standard bike rack.
A couple more of security features at the facility is we've got five closed-circuit television cameras monitoring this facility 24 hours a day. We've also got nine bright LED environmentally friendly light fixtures which keep the facility pretty bright, even at night time and finally we've got a blue-light call box in the back of the facility in case there is an emergency. All of these features contribute to the idea that this is a controlled secured place and a safe place to leave your bicycle.
Another feature at this bike and ride facility is this bike repair stand outside. It's got tools for minor repairs and air pump in case you get a flat tire.
To sign up, go to www.wmata.com/bikeandride or call the 1-800 number for BikeLink listed outside the facility or on all of the literature. For twenty dollars we'll send you a bike link card and stickers for your bike. The first time you use the facility, we'll deduct five dollars for an id verification and registration process. After that, the facility cost five cents per hour to use or two cents an hour overnight. That works out to about fifty cents a day for most regular commuters. The bike and ride provides a secure and easy way to get to Metrorail. We hope you'll try it out, sign up for a card and start out your day with a little bit of fresh air and exercise.
