My name is Victor Bishop-Williams. I felt humbled and honored when Bill’s family ask me to speak today about our wonderful dear friend Bill Wine. I will never forget how much joy, laughter and amazing memories we have had together. I was having a difficult time over the last few days on what to say today because there is so much to say about this beautiful man. So I decided to speak from my heart.
My husband Michael and I met Bill and Phil at a dinner party a mutual friend was having on August 1982. Michael and I had just finished school living in Los Angeles and decided to purchase a home. Only thing we didn’t realize was that we would have to move all the way out to Ontario in order to do this. Having just moved to Ontario not knowing any one …you can imagine our joy meeting Bill at this dinner party. If you have ever sat next to Bill at a dinner party you absolutely know what I mean. He was funny, inquisitive, honest , a great listener with so much love. Bill really wanted to know about us. The evening went to fast… however Michael and I knew we had met one of the most wonderful people in the universe that evening and just hoped he felt the same way.
Well, he did and 41 years later with all the ups and downs of life were still the best of friends.
Bill was a mentor and role model to us. He was a very successful business man with his own accounting business, he owned a beautiful home, drove great cars and had an amazing loving relationship. With all of this success Bill always put family first. He loved his Dad - Luther and idolized his Mum Margie. God bless them both may they rest in peace. His Sister Leah was his best friend in life. It was wonderful being around the two of them, so much love, laughter and fun always. Michael and I did not have any family living in California, so Bill welcomed Michael and I into his family and it was a magical time filled with amazing memories.
Then there was his husband Phil. Bill loved Phil so very much. I loved hearing the story of their courtship and how in the end he followed his heart and it was the right decision. Bill worshipped the ground Phil walked on. In a time of few role models in our community from a relationship standpoint there were none better than Bill and Phil. The unconditional love these two had has inspired many family and friends they have included in their lives.
Through the good, the hard, the sad and the momentous times they always knew they could count on each other without a doubt.
I know Phil was waiting at heaven’s gate with arms wide open for Bill.
Bill had so many other passions as well. He loved car’s, long vacations, great food and drink. He loved life.
Bill was a great listener. We would talk about the things I had going on in my life; like when people were not nice or corporate politics. He would always say – be strong and be who you are- be your authentic self and you will do well in life. He said growing up that’s what he did in life. I really valued his advice and felt no matter what… he was always in my corner rooting me on. Bill did not have a jealous bone in his body. He wanted everyone to be happy, successful and live their life as they wanted.
Bill would always greet you with one of his wonderful hugs. Bill had the best hug of anyone I have ever known. It was long, strong affectionate, friendly, loving and warm. I will miss this.
When Michael and I had our children Joseph & Justin, Bill was so excited, he was the first over to meet them. Bill was there for us supporting us cheering us on- he was family. Justin and Joseph love Uncle Bill unconditionally to this day.
Bill would speak of his dreams. We spoke often about retiring and how he would like to live in Palm Springs because so many of his good friends would be there. He would talk about traveling and spending time with his Sister Leah and traveling with friends. He would make me laugh and tell me he was looking forward to Michael and I retiring so we could hang out , buy some rocking chairs and reflect on our wonderful life’s. We were looking forward to this too.
As I was writing this over many days it made me reflect on my own life and what’s truly important. There are only a handful of people who come into your world and touch your life in a dramatic fashion. Some of the people are just flickers of light, while a few are consistent glows for a lifetime. For Michael, myself and our family and I am sure for many of you Bill Wine was a constant glow that made a huge difference. He was who is was, no one else, a pure soul. He believed in God. He believed good always took out evil. He believed in family first. He believed in Love and True friendship. If you were lucky enough to know Bill you were blessed beyond imagination.
Bill I love you, I miss you. You have graced my life and so many others more that you will ever know.
God Bless you my friend. Peace be with you forever.
