Located in downtown Sioux Falls, the first Minnehaha County Courthouse is built of locally quarried Sioux Quartzite. Construction of the building was begun in 1889 and completed in 1893. The building was closed as a courthouse in 1962 but concerned citizens saved the structure from the wrecking ball in 1974. The building is now a museum offering three levels of public exhibit space and a restored circuit courtroom.
