I zero all my comp guns at 18 yards. In USPSA, most targets are 14 yards and in. Maybe 30% push to 20 yards, and only 5% go past 25.
At 18, I get a forgiving zero slightly high at 30 yards, which helps avoid noshoots or penalties on obscured targets. It also gives me some cushion if I dip the gun entering a position hard, since the bullet’s still rising just past 18.
The beauty is I don’t have to think about holdovers, it just lets me shoot.
That said, I’d adjust based on match trends. If you mostly see targets inside 20, maybe go 15. If your area leans more IPSC with longer shots, a 25-yard zero might make more sense.
