Vianden castle is one of the symbols and best-known attractions of Luxembourg. The castle dates back to the early Middle Ages, but it was built on the foundations of a Roman-era fortress. The peak of its importance was between the 11th and 14th centuries. In different historical eras, parts were added to it in different architectural styles. Gradually losing importance after the 17th century, the castle fell into disrepair. Starting from the 19th century, it was renovated and passed to the State of Luxembourg from being the Grand Duke's family possession.
