Did The Four-Reasons steal this song? 🤨
This beat-up acetate from Bell Sound Studios in NYC might be evidence of a desperate moment in Doo-Wop history.
The lore goes that in late 1963, The Four-Reasons were rehearsing in the same building as The Four-Evers, who were having a massive regional hit with "Lover Come Back To Me." Legend says Sal DiMarco (The Four-Reasons' songwriter) heard them through the thin walls. Desperate for a hit of his own, he allegedly wrote "Tell Me Why" overnight to capitalize on that driving, stomping sound.
The result is a track that sounds suspiciously familiar...
👂 THE LISTENER CHALLENGE:
Listen closely to the melody and the driving beat. Can you hear the similarity to The Four-Evers' "Lover Come Back To Me"?
Was this a case of parallel thinking, or was Sal DiMarco trying to steal their thunder before the British Invasion arrived? Let us know your verdict in the comments!
