The origins of the city, which was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman fort, date back to 1212. Over the years, Timosoara, the largest city in western Romania, has been influenced by different cultures.
The Romans used it as a fort until it was destroyed by the Tatars in the thirteenth century. Conquered in 1552 by the army of Turkey, under whose protection it remained until 1718, it came under Austrian power for two centuries.
