Farmers flooded the streets of Brussels with tractors as protests erupted against the European Union’s proposed Mercosur trade deal with South American nations. Hundreds of tractors blocked key roads near EU institutions while thousands of farmers gathered in the European quarter during a high-stakes EU leaders’ summit.

The demonstrations turned violent outside the European Parliament, as protesters burned tires and hay, threw potatoes and eggs at police, and set off fireworks. Authorities responded with tear gas and water cannons, and parts of the city were sealed off as traffic came to a halt.

Farmers fear the Mercosur agreement will allow cheaper agricultural imports from Brazil and neighbouring countries, undercutting European producers who face stricter regulations.
