STORYLINE:
US aircraft carrier strike groups were crossing the Western Pacific on Sunday to participate in a three-carrier strike force exercise in international waters.
Vessels included the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Nimitz and ships from the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force.
