The neon lights of the Boiling Isles—or rather, the local community center’s gymnasium—flickered with the energy of a hundred different costumes. It was Halloween, and for the inseparable duo of Odette and Colette, it was the most important night of the year.
Odette, usually known for her earthy brown tones and easy-going nature, was currently adjusting a purple-and-white hooded crop top. She checked her reflection in a nearby punch bowl. With her short, dark hair and high-waisted shorts over leggings, she was the spitting image of Luz Noceda.
“How do I look, Colette?” Odette asked, striking a pose and holding up a hand-drawn ‘Light Glyph’ on a piece of yellow paper. “Do I look like I’m ready to learn some wild magic?”
Colette stepped out from behind a decorative cardboard cauldron, and Odette’s breath hitched. Colette had gone all out. Her usually vibrant purple exoskeleton was perfectly complemented by a sleek, black long-sleeved dress with a crescent moon necklace hanging from her neck. To complete the look, she had found a temporary hair dye that turned her head-tufts a soft, lilac shade, just like Amity Blight’s iconic look.
“You look like you’re about to accidentally blow up a classroom,” Colette teased, her voice soft and warm. She adjusted her burgundy leggings and smoothed down her dress. “And me? Do I look sufficiently ‘top student’?”
“You look amazing,” Odette whispered, her antennas twitching with excitement. “The lilac really brings out your eyes. You’re definitely the coolest witch in Hexside.”
The two of them moved through the party, their contrasting colors making them a focal point of the dance floor. They weren’t just two friends in costumes; they were a team. As they walked, Odette kept "casting" light spells by flashing her paper glyphs at people, while Colette stayed in character, maintaining a playful, slightly aloof "Amity" smirk—at least until Odette made a particularly silly pun.
“Hey, Amity,” Odette said, leaning in close as a slow song began to play. “I know I’m just a human from Connecticut, but I think I’ve fallen under your spell.”
Colette laughed, the sound bright and genuine. “That was terrible, Luz. Truly. But lucky for you, I’ve got a soft spot for humans.”
They moved to the center of the gym. Under the spinning disco ball, the brown and purple of their outfits blended together. For a moment, the gymnasium disappeared. They weren't in a suburban town; they were standing on the Grom dance floor, facing down their fears together.
Odette reached out, and Colette took her hand, their white-gloved fingers interlocking. They swayed to the music, the height difference between them mimicking the characters they loved. It was more than just a costume; it was a celebration of their own story—two different spirits who found a home in each other.
“Happy Halloween, Colette,” Odette said, resting her head against her partner’s.
“Happy Halloween, Odette,” Colette replied, squeezing her hand. “Best costume choice ever.”
As the song ended, Odette pulled a small bag of candy from her pocket—mostly Good Witch Azura-themed sweets she’d hunted down online. They shared a piece of chocolate, laughing as they watched a group of kids try to do the "Monster Mash," content to be exactly who they were: a brown cockroach, a purple cockroach, and the perfect Luz and Amity.
