Santa Claus has officially taken flight, and the North American Aerospace Defense Command is once again tracking his Christmas Eve journey around the world.
NORAD is best known for monitoring airspace over the United States and Canada, using radar systems, satellites and fighter aircraft to watch for potential threats. On Christmas Eve, those same systems are used for a beloved holiday tradition: tracking Santa’s sleigh as it delivers gifts across the globe.
NORAD Commander Gen. Gregory Guillot says the operation relies on real-world technology — and a little Christmas magic — as Santa moves faster than any aircraft on Earth.
The Santa tracking effort is staffed by NORAD personnel, members of the U.S. and Canadian armed forces, civilian employees and volunteers who answer calls from children and families curious about Santa’s location.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of NORAD’s Santa tracking tradition.
