“The luxurious hotel is a serious architectural icon inside and out, though very few know quirky facts behind the hotel, it’s history, and famous design elements that are about to be revealed.

Located within the Financial District of Downtown Los Angeles, the building occupies an entire city block withg guests often marveling at how big it is. In fact, it is not only the tallest building in Los Angeles, it is the tallest building in California and home to the highest public lounge west of the Mississippi River.

It would seem obvious, though when L.A. natives and out-of-towners alike visit for the first time they are often surprised the luxurious hotel actually resides within the Wilshire Grand Center – a building of mixed use including hotel, retail, and office complex.

The DNA of the legendary hotel is more imaginative with deep rooted motives than one would imagine. Every curvature, art installation, and overall decor of the hotel was intentionally placed to embody elements of architectural historian Reyner Banham’s book Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies. These ecologies include Autopia or car culture, Foot Hills, Surfurbia/beach culture, the Plains of Id or the flats, and a fifth self-added ecology, Downtown L.A. The elevator rides leave visitors in awe, starting with the double-deck high speed elevators that must be taken to access the main lobby. These elevators whisk guests up to the 70th floor check-in lobby in just under forty seconds without feeling. There is also the exclusive ‘Champagne shuttle’, a glass elevator with floor to ceiling windows with all around city views. This graciously takes guests to the rooftop lounge, Spire 73, in the most memorable fashion.

An art piece displayed in the Lobby Lounge is as practical as it is timeless. Showing a historical image of the Studebaker Dealership that originally occupied the space, it includes an old adage written in neon that states: From MAIN we SPRING to BROADWAY and over the HILL to OLIVE, O wouldn’t it be GRAND if we could HOPE to pick a FLOWER on FIGUEROA. At one time, this was actually taught to children to help them remember the order of the Downtown streets, and still remains true today.

The hotel has also won many accolades for its innovation and creativity. Funny enough, one of it’s most coveted laurel is the 1st in LEED-Gold Certified for building Design and Construction in DTLA that was largely due to the construct of the guest room bathrooms. In 2019, the hotel was recognized as a Four Diamond Hotel and was also Michelin Guide recommended. It also ranked in #22 for 2018’s Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, moving to #10 in the 2019 awards.
