🚆 Narmada Express: Bilaspur → Ujjain | A Rail Journey Through Central India 🌿

All aboard the Narmada Express (Train No. 18234 / 18233) — running daily between Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) and Indore (Madhya Pradesh), passing via Ujjain.

In this video, I capture the route segment from Bilaspur → Ujjain, traversing dense forests, river valleys, and historic towns.

🌲 Setting Off from Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh)

Your journey begins at Uslapur — the suburban station for Bilaspur town in Chhattisgarh. Soon after departure, the urban skyline yields to fields and pockets of forest. The early part of the route winds through Chhattisgarh’s green belt, where the landscape is a mix of sal, teak, and deciduous growth.

Into the Depths: Amarkantak & the Narmada’s Origins

Before entering full rural stretches, the train skirts areas that are ecologically tied to the Amarkantak range — the sacred highland where the River Narmada originates. This region is rich in biodiversity and forest cover, setting a mystical tone for the ride ahead.

The Narmada River flows westwards across Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat before meeting the Arabian Sea. It is one of India’s seven holy rivers, deeply woven into local religious traditions and ecology.

Into Madhya Pradesh: Stations & Transitions

Crossing into Madhya Pradesh, the first major station encountered is Anuppur Junction. From here, the route continues through Burhar, Shahdol, and Birsinghpur in Shahdol district. Each stretch shows changing terrain — plateaus, forested corridors, small cuts, and local settlements clustered along the tracks.

Next, you reach Katni South (Katni Junction) — a key junction in central MP.

This is where rails from eastern and northern corridors converge. The area around Katni is known for mining, limestone, and heavy freight traffic, creating a contrast between natural beauty and industrial presence.

After Katni, the train continues through smaller halts and stretches of rural landscapes before arriving at Jabalpur Junction.

Jabalpur is a major city on the Narmada’s banks and is home to the famous Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat — an enchanting gorge carved by the Narmada, with cliffs and rapids that become magical during sunset or moonlit boat rides.

Moving Further: Bhopal to Ujjain

From Jabalpur, the Narmada Express heads westward. It stops at other towns and junctions like Itarsi Junction, then enters the route toward Bhopal Junction — the “City of Lakes.”

The shift in ambiance from forests to more open plains becomes noticeable, with occasional glimpses of lakes, farm fields, and semi-urban belts.

After Bhopal and intermediate halts like Sehore, Shujalpur, etc., the train terminates (for your video) at Ujjain Junction — one of India’s holiest cities, perched on the banks of the Narmada and known for the Kumbh Mela, ancient temples, and its spiritual aura.

From Bilaspur’s greenery to Ujjain’s spiritual calm, this journey covers over 1,000 km in about 23 hours 10 minutes with 51 halts.

The Narmada River is the 5th longest river in India and overall the longest west-flowing river in the country. It is also the largest flowing river in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This river flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat in India and is known as their lifeline due to its contribution to the two states in many ways. The Narmada River rises from the Amarkantak Plateau in Anuppur district in Madhya Pradesh. It forms the traditional boundary between North and South India and flows westwards for 1,312 km (815.2 mi) before draining through the Gulf of Khambhat into the Arabian Sea, 30 km (18.6 mi) west of Bharuch city of Gujarat.

It is one of only two major rivers in peninsular India that runs from east to west (longest west flowing river), along with the Tapti River. It is one of the rivers in India that flows in a rift valley, bordered by the Satpura and Vindhya ranges.
