(WXYZ) Dearborn, Mich. - The Islamic Center of America in Dearborn is a spiritual place. But of late, it has become toxic to some, as questions loom over the handling of money.

Particularly by Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini.

Some board members have publicly accused the Imam of mishandling the books.

Something he denies. During a recent sermon, he reportedly threatened to resign, but didn't, claiming a ground swell of support.

When we visited the center today. the Imam was nowhere to be found, and the administrator told us they had no official comment, but described the situation as "a mess".

Imam Mohammed Elahi is a former Imam at the center.

"There have been some disagreements...that must be resolved through dialog, faithfully and respectfully," he told Action News in a statement. "The goal should be reconciliation or a peaceful end." He continued, "As far as I know, the majority of the board and the congregation appreciate the services of Imam Qazwini. I already sent messages to both parties, expressing our humble willingness to facilitate a dignified, direct dialog between our brothers and sisters at the Islamic Center."

According to their website, the Islamic center was formed to 'receive, administer and distribute funds to; preserve and teach the religion of Islam'...

The rift here has been developing for a while sources say.

Board members being of Lebanese decent, and the Imam of Iraqi descent hasn't helped matters.

Critics have threatened to inform the state attorney general of improper handling of donations.

None of those critics returned our calls for comment.
