Dungeness River Levee Walk with Skye – Wetland Waterway Blocked by Flood Debris

Diane was out of town visiting her mom in the adult care home and I needed to get away from all the constant horrific news about Trump and Greenland, ICE immigration raids in Minneapolis, peaceful protests turning violent and U.S. citizens shot dead by Federal agents. A walk with Skye at Dungeness River Levee in the sun seemed the perfect, peaceful respite.

On this chilly but sunny late January day, I decided to take Skye, our four-and-a-half-year-old Norwegian Elkhound for a walk on the Dungeness River Levee trail. The elevated levee path provides a magnificent 360-degree view of the farmlands, treelined Dungeness River, snow-covered Olympic Mountains, and an occasional view of Mount Baker in the Cascade Mountain Range. The cobalt blue skies, high-level cirrus clouds and brilliant winter sun low on the horizon produced a spectacular setting for another outdoor adventure with Skye here in Sequim, Washington.

“The Lower Dungeness River Floodplain Restoration Project relocated a portion of the levee system along the lower reaches of the Dungeness River. This multi-agency effort has reconnected more than 175 acres of the river’s historic floodplain, resulting in reduced flood risk and expanded habitat for salmon and other fish and wildlife species. Within its first year, the benefits have been profound resulting in benefits to fish and wildlife, water and wetland conservation, and reduction of flow energy in the lower reach of the river during high water periods.
