Reeds. You get that one that just works, but you know your time with it is limited. When do you use it? How long should you play on it? Will you ever find another one that's as good as this one? The struggle is real...
I'm cycling through three different brands of reeds these days - 2 each: Rico "orange box", D'addario Royals, and Vandoren V16. They all work, but what sound and feels "right"? And then there's the cost... what's a reed worth?

Hey - I’m Doug - Lead Pastor at Gospel Chapel in Grand Forks, and a sometimes music guy. I play sax and guitar. I’ve been playing sax since grade 8, which was a while ago; guitar since I was in grade 10. I have a diploma in music performance from Grant MacEwan Community College in Edmonton. However, this is just a side hobby and has been since 1994.
I’m posting just to track where I’m at today, and share the journey. I’m not a pro player, I’ve done some teaching over the years. I’m not in a position to get a “pro” sax, but everyone seems to suggest that’s wholly secondary to just putting in the work. That I can do… Just another pilgrim on the journey.
Saxophones:
Tenor - Jupiter JTS 587, Jody Jazz HR* 6; Rovner Light lig, 2.5 or 3 reeds (various)
Alto - Jupiter JAS 767; Otto Link 7*, Meyer 5M, or Selmer S80 C*; Rovner Light lig, 1.5 or 2 reed on the link, 3’s on the other two.
For professional level help with saxophone playing, I’ve found the following extremely helpful and entertaining.
Dr. Walley Wallace at / @drwallysax
Jamie Anderson at / @getyoursaxtogether
Jay Metcalf at / @bettersax
Bob Reynolds at / @bobreynolds
Adrien Spencer at / @sirvalorsax
