Bohemian folk song created in England.
I wrote this song for my mum who was born Erika Schroll in 1936. She grew up in the picturesque town of Saaz, Bohemia in 1936. I tried to imagine what her childhood would have been like with a sense of innocence and joy and naivity until WW2 world war crashed into that joy.
In 2009, my mum published a book called A Childhood in Bohemia, which was succinctly reviewed by an anonymous reader in 2017
A moving and inspiring book
"Most of us learnt about the Munich Agreement at school, but how little we know of the Sudeten Germans' experiences during and after the war, when they were expelled from their homeland. Erika Storey has an amazing recollection of people and events, and she's good on the historical background too. No friend of Hitler, she gives a lucid explanation of his rise to total power, which is as convincing as that of any professional historian. Millions of people were displaced in central and eastern Europe in 1945, so her book stands for them rather as Anne Frank's Diary stands for the lost Jews of Europe. This book has important general lessons too. It tells us what happens when civilisation is allowed to break down, and human hatred is given free rein. But it also tells us how adversity strengthens the human spirit. In her introduction, Erika says her experiences have enriched her life and taught her valuable lessons. Her book deserves to be widely read and should be in every secondary school and university library."
