In Armenia, the word 'estradayin' (էստրադային / էսդրատային, lit. 'of the stage') acts as the collective name of popular music of this era. These songs were either composed by popular songwriters and conductors, such as Artemi Ayvazyan – the founder of the Armenian State Jazz Orchestra, – Khachatur Avetisyan, Konstantin Orbelyan, and Hasmik Manaseryan, or were adaptations for the big stage from folk and bard (gusan/ashugh) repertoire.
The genre name is derived from French (estrade - 'platform') by way of the eponymous genre of Soviet variety song, known as estradnaya pesnya (эстрадная песня). The latter was a similarly orchestrated style with shades of sentimental balladry, big band jazz, schlager, and native folkloric elements, a standard brew across the Union with differences across the board that paved the way for contemporary pop music. 'Estrada' and its variations can now refer to pop music in general, too, but this usage is rarer where strictly modern pop is concerned.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, artists in the Lebanese Armenian diaspora – in Bourj Hammoud – such as Adiss Harmandian, Paul Baghdadlian, and Maxim Panossian developed an even more boisterous strain of this style, in line with contemporary Mediterranean music. Distinguished by a faster tempo, electric guitar solos, drum breaks, and frisky dance rhythms, it resonated widely with Armenian audiences worldwide.
