I woke to my daughter's music box playing downstairs — she hates that thing. I crept down, the music stopped, the living room untouched, and my daughter asleep. Wet, child-sized footprints led from the box to my bedroom door — not going in, coming out — back to a basement door I’d locked after finding frantic scratches carved inside.
