The God Who Isn’t Going Anywhere
Jordan had a habit of assuming people would eventually leave.
Not dramatically — just slowly, quietly, the way friendships fade or texts stop getting answered. Life had taught him to hold people loosely, to never expect too much, to always have a backup plan.
So when things got hard, he didn’t reach out. He didn’t pray. He didn’t ask for help. He just powered through, telling himself he didn’t need anyone.
One morning, after a night of tossing and turning, he grabbed his keys and went for a drive. No destination. Just movement. The sky was still gray, the world half-asleep, and Jordan felt like he was drifting through it.
He pulled into a small coffee shop he’d never noticed before — the kind with mismatched chairs and a chalkboard menu. As he waited for his drink, he overheard the barista humming a tune he recognized from childhood church days. Something about it tugged at him.
He sat by the window, watching the sun slowly push through the clouds. And in that quiet moment, something settled over him — not a voice, not a vision, just a presence. Familiar. Steady. Warm.
A thought rose in him, uninvited but undeniable:
You keep expecting Me to leave. I won’t.
Jordan blinked, surprised by the clarity of it. He wasn’t praying. He wasn’t even trying to be spiritual. But the message was unmistakable — gentle, patient, almost amused.
You can run, you can hide, you can pretend you don’t need Me. But I’m here. I’ve always been here. And I’m not going anywhere.
He felt something loosen in his chest — a knot he didn’t know he’d been carrying. For the first time in a long time, he let himself lean back, breathe deeply, and simply exist without bracing for loss.
The sun finally broke through, spilling gold across the table. Jordan wrapped his hands around the warm cup and let the moment wash over him.
He didn’t have everything figured out. He still had questions, fears, habits he wasn’t proud of. But he realized something important:
God wasn’t waiting for him to be perfect.
God wasn’t keeping score.
God wasn’t planning an exit.
God loved him — stubbornly, consistently, relentlessly.
And Jordan smiled to himself, shaking his head.
“Alright,” he whispered. “I guess I better get used to this.”
Outside, the day brightened. Inside, so did he.
Because once you realize God isn’t going anywhere, the whole world feels a little more like home.
