Описание: It is easy to assume that owning resources (whether built or bought) is superior to borrowing resources (through an alliance or joint venture). However, accessing external resources plays a very important role in corporate strategy. In this video, I discuss the governance costs of creating synergies and factors that would increase transaction costs relative to ownership costs, which would increase the value of organizing synergies within a firm rather than between firms. On the other hand, when synergies are two-sided and require little resource modification, synergies can often be created at a lower cost between firms. This video uses the Resource Pathways framework to consider when resources should be accessed through a contract or alliance. It also discusses how joint ventures are a good corporate strategy to use when a firm needs to share tacit knowledge to create value with a partner, while simultaneously protecting their ownership of that knowledge. It also discusses the factors that make some alliances worth more than others, and what allows that relational advantage to be maintained.
