In this video I look at ideal lower limb alignment whilst performing three body weight lower limb exercises - squats, lunges and one legged dips.
Ideal lower limb alignment involves lining up the centre of the patella (kneecap) with the line of the 2nd toe whilst maintaining a neutral medial (inner) foot arch. A neutral medial foot arch also means that the 1st metatarso-phalangeal joint (ball of the 1st toe) and the inner border of the heel remain in contact with the floor.
Maintaining lower limb alignment optimises two factors:
1. Performance of the exercise or drill.
2. Safeguards the components of the lower limb most importantly the joint surfaces.
Always focus on quality over quantity. If you notice your ability to maintain your alignment is lessening during a set then stop, take a short micro break before re-setting and re-starting.
