OVERVIEW
The Keyboard Sonata in E major, K.380 (L.23) is one of Domenico Scarlatti’s most popular and accessible sonatas, admired for its noble and songlike character.
It is written in binary form (two repeated sections, typical of Scarlatti’s sonatas) and marked Andante comodo, giving it a calm, graceful flow rather than the fiery virtuosity found in many of his other works.
The nickname “Cortège” (meaning procession in French) is not Scarlatti’s own, but was added later by publishers or interpreters.
It reflects the stately, ceremonial feeling of the music — like a gentle parade or dignified march.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757), born in Naples, spent much of his career in the Iberian Peninsula—serving at the Portuguese and later Spanish courts, particularly in Madrid.
He wrote over 550 keyboard sonatas, mostly for his pupil, Princess Maria Barbara, who became Queen of Spain.
K.380 likely dates from his middle Spanish period (around the 1740s–1750s) and shows how Scarlatti absorbed influences from Spanish folk and court music while remaining rooted in Italian lyricism.
MUSICAL SIGNIFICANCE
K.380 shows Scarlatti’s ability to turn simplicity into elegance.
It reveals his melodic sensitivity and balance between Italian cantabile (song-like beauty) and Spanish atmosphere (dignified rhythm and ornamentation).
It also represents how Scarlatti transformed the keyboard sonata form into something uniquely personal — a bridge between Baroque style and the coming Classical period.
Because of its moderate tempo, expressive melody, and graceful style, this sonata has been performed both on harpsichord and piano, each revealing different colors — the harpsichord emphasizing clarity and dance rhythm, the piano bringing out warmth and singing tone.
