Custom Paint Job for the Mini-Z Buggy Brushless MB-010VE

I've owned the Mini-Z Buggy MB-010VE 2.0 for two years and it's time to paint that lexan body. Unlike the RTR version with nicely painted bodies, the brushless buggy came with an unpainted Inferno MP9 body. With some recent spray painting experiences, and warmer temperatures, it's time to take care of this. One big challenge is that Kyosho did not bother to include window masks. That's not very nice!

I picked up some Tamiya masking time and started manually masking the front window. With some patience, the front rectangular window is done. The side windows are more painful. They are triangular but not exactly with straight lines. For someone who didn't paint, I sure have stocked up a bunch of supplies. This 3mm Tamiya masking tape for curves is flexible. This will be handy for outlining the side windows.

With a lot more patience, I got the outline done here. This masking tape bends and sticks easily. It does its job well. Using liquid masks might be easier here. I will consider it for next time. Fill in the interior with the wider masking tape. Use a blade cutter to trim as needed. Fortunately, the other side window is the same. Since I'm not going for any fancy paint schemes, there's nothing more to mask here.

This is now ready for painting! I had already washed the lexan with soap before masking. Because I've run the body for 2 years, the protective sheet has come off at the edges. I'm using tape to cover them.

This is the Tamiya PS-15 metallic red rattle can. My goal is to match the color of the paint to the red alloy parts on the chassis. I guess I prefer a simple paint scheme. The lexan body comes with a little nose piece too. That will be painted in the same color. As usual, the first coat is a light dusting. The second coat is heavier. It's important to start angling the spray to hit all the inner surfaces, especially the nooks and crannies. With the third coat I'm making sure there's 100% coverage.

I decided to apply a coat of white paint to make the red pop more. This will end up causing some white paint to get into bleed onto the front of the lexan where a protective sheet had peeled off.

The moment of truth. The metallic red color looks pretty spot on! The lexan looks so shiny with the protective sheet off. Notice that some paint did get to the outside. Some I could scrape off, but some I couldn't. It's not too terrible. The lesson learned here is not running a lexan body that I want to paint eventually. The manual window masks worked wonderfully! The Tamiya masking tapes kept the edges quite crisp, and they peeled off cleanly. I gotta say that the little Inferno body looks great with clear windows and a flat color scheme.

The little nose piece is secured by the provided foam tape. I'm happy with this! It's the first time I have the nose on.

Next let's paint the rear wing in PS-5 black. This wing got some serious narrow niches. I ended up with three coats but they were not enough! I didn't spray enough into the folded edges of the wing. That's too bad but I should be able to fill them in with a sharpie later.

With the painted wing mounted. As far as my lexan painting skills go, there are lots of room for improvements. But it still looks great to me! Now the MB-010VE is complete.

With a fresh coat of paint, let's go drive.
