Our 2025 strategy was to allow our #1 hive to grow, but we wanted to prevent it from swarming. So, we rotated brood boxes every week or so, to allow the queen to find open frames to lay eggs. This strategy worked, and we also pulled out 3 frames later in July, when it looked like there were some queen cells - and placed them in hive #2. This also worked, as Hive #2 started laying brood a few weeks later, giving us a 2nd hive and preventing swarming.
It's essential to have some extra brood boxes around, in order to prevent overcrowding and swarming. We've purchased both 8-frame brood boxes and 10-frame brood boxes from vendors to prevent swarming.
