Born: November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in a working-class, Irish-Catholic family .
Family Background: He was the oldest of four siblings. His father later became a used-car salesman; the family moved to Claymont, Delaware during his childhood .

Personal Tragedies & Family
1972 Accident: Just weeks after his first Senate win, a car crash killed his first wife Neilia and their daughter Naomi; his sons Beau and Hunter were injured. He was sworn in at the hospital .
Beau’s Death: In 2015, Biden’s eldest son Beau died of brain cancer, a loss he later chronicled in his memoir Promise Me, Dad (2017) .
Second Marriage: Married Jill Jacobs in 1977; they have a daughter, Ashley. In June 2025, they celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary
