Meizhou (formerly named Jiayingzhou) is a prefecture-level city in eastern Guangdong province, China. It is an important Hakka settlement and is the ancestral home of many Hakka descendants living in overseas, including Indonesia. It comprises two districts, one city and five counties: Meixian, Meijiang, Jiaoling, Pingyuan, Xingning, Wuhua, Dabu and Fengshun, each has slightly different accents.
The Meixian dialect is considered the standard Hakka dialect and used in public TV broadcast in China mainland. The Taiwanese Siyan Hakka dialect was also originated from the original four counties in Meizhou (Meixian, Jiaoling, Pingyuan, Xingning). At the end of this video, I added a public speech in Indonesian Meixian accent (courtesy of Paguyuban Meizhou Indonesia). It reminds me of my grandpa. His accent sounds just like that.
