This is how you should pay your detection K9

In this video we break down our approach to detection dog work—specifically how we reinforce correct behavior when all the key behaviors are performed in a perfect way by your K9.
Reinforcement is more than “just food or a toy.” The key is knowing what exactly you want to strengthen, and which criteria must be met before you pay. As handlers, we often have only a moment to decide: Did the dog do it right—or did the dog do it so well that a primary reinforcer makes sense to lock in that behavior long-term? In this example you’ll see our Malinois Kool (KNPV lines). He was started as a young dog on the training odor KONG, and in this session he’s searching for firearm-associated odor (gunshot residues).
Terms we discuss in the video:
⚠️ R+ = unannounced reinforcement delivered to the location where the dog should focus
⚠️ SR+ = announced reinforcement delivered at the handler OR an alternative release cue to an externally placed reward
⚠️ SD (discriminative stimulus) = a new cue / new job, e.g., a recall into center position at the handler
⚠️ Bridges = different stimuli that function like a “keep going” signal for the dog that were conditionned before
If the video helped you: leave a comment, hit like, and subscribe. And if you know other handlers or K9 people who’d be interested—send it to them. We’ll be sharing a lot more about or live and training with working dogs in Austria.
