Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil extracted from the fruit of oil palm trees. Two main types are produced: crude palm oil, which is obtained by pressing the fleshy outer fruit, and palm kernel oil, which comes from crushing the hard kernel, or stone, at the center of the fruit.
Originally native to Africa, oil palm trees were introduced to Southeast Asia just over a century ago, initially as ornamental plants. Today, the region dominates global production, with Indonesia and Malaysia accounting for more than 85% of the world’s palm oil supply. In addition to these two leaders, palm oil is now produced in over 40 other countries worldwide.
