Which dinosaurs would be best for fantasy warfare? This series explores how civilizations from Earth’s history would utilize dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals to defend their territory, defeat their enemies, and support their vast empires. The setting we’re discussing is fairly grounded, with just enough magic to make the concept work, along with some extra pizzazz. Humans are born with bonding gems in their foreheads that correspond to certain types of animals born with the same gem. For example, obsidian corresponds to dromaeosaurs. The natural condition and size of one’s bonding gem limits the size of the animal you can bond, so an exceptionally pristine and large obsidian gem would allow you to bond a massive raptor. Smaller or less clear gems would limit you to animals like Deinonychus, or even Velociraptor if you’re on the lower end of the bell curve. Bonding an animal grants your chosen battle-partner human levels of intelligence, and you can communicate telepathically with your bonding animal from up to a mile away. This permits levels of coordination, training, and troop maintenance that would otherwise be impractical or impossible.
