Well in the heart of north Kolkata there is a settlements of potters (Kumor in bengali) and the place is so named as “Kumortuli”. The history of the place dates back as old the city itself if not more . If you have a look this places is obviously situated beside the Ganges near Shovabazar so that the craftsmen got easy supply of the mud. Initially pottery was the main source of income but gradually as community Durga Puja gained popularity, creating Durga idols became main stream business and that made it famous .

The Artists of Kumortuli earned their reputation for their skillful hands that can design a lump of clay into fascinating figurines.
