"Well, at the moment the centre has been secured and closed. What will happen is that we need to close the actual area that has been affected, close that off, make sure that it is stable, enough for the emergency teams, the consulting teams, the structural engineers to go in and try and assess what caused it and the extent of the damage and so forth."

16. SOUNDBITE: (English) Andre Pruis, Deputy National Police Commissioner:
"I think the way in which they have handled the scene is really handling a disaster management scene by text book, they cordoned off a perimeter, established a medical post, they cordoned off the outer perimeter. They evacuated the building then they saw to it that everything is safe inside. They eventually started to control people and get people out of the scene outside."

STORYLINE:
Investigators are trying to discover what caused part of a busy shopping centre in South Africa's capital to collapse onto an ice rink crowded with children.
Broken and bent metal were viewed by officials and inspectors on Friday as Pretoria began counting the cost of Thursday's disaster in which dozens of people were injured, including two infants.
Many of the injured were hurt when a glass wall at the rink shattered.
Rescue teams with sniffer dogs confirmed there was no-one trapped under the rubble.
A police dog was injured while searching the building.
South Africa's Deputy National Police Commander described the rescue effort as a "textbook" operation.
The Kolonnade Shopping Centre will remain closed until engineers can stabilise the damaged section of the building.
It is still not clear what caused the 25-square-metre section of the ceiling above the ice rink to collapse.
The section was newly constructed and opened in October.
