Fond memories of Manchester's first independent local radio station - Piccadilly Radio 261, which started broadcasting on 2 April 1974 from studios in Piccadilly Plaza, Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester (UK). In those days most people listened to the Medium Wave transmission on 261 metres (hence the station's name). But they also broadcast on VHF (now more commonly called FM) - which is where this recording was taped from in January 1975. Here are some vintage clips of Steve England with the Top 20 show, followed by the Roger Day show.
Both DJs were formerly with Radio Caroline. The MD of Piccadilly Radio was Philip Birch, the former MD of 60s offshore station Big L, Radio London. Steve England was the jingles maestro on Caroline and Piccadilly. In the late 70s he co-founded the Manchester based jingles company Alfasound.

Andy Peebles chats to Roger Day on his late night show in February 1978, with memories of the United Biscuits Network (which closed in 1979) and dialing 261 from a telephone box to hear the football scores on Piccadilly.
This is radio before big corporate takeovers, when radio presentation was a skilled job, and before computers took control of everything.

Memories of the fondly remembered Belle Vue Zoological Gardens and Amusement Park in Manchester. This 16mm colour footage is mostly from the summer season 1976. The Zoo closed the following year, at the end of the summer season 1977. This was the beginning of the end for Belle Vue, and within four years virtually everything on the site had closed. Today the site is given over mainly to housing, and there are few clues to its glorious past.
