In the Arctic, everything is a challenge. But Dave Whelihan of Lincoln Laboratory is up for the challenge — specifically to engineer sensing technologies capable of surviving in this desolate, harsh environment where ice floes (sheets) are always on the move. Leveraging the infrastructure set up by the U.S. Navy to conduct operational readiness exercises in the Arctic region as part of Operation Ice Camp, Whelihan has been testing prototype sensor nodes designed to monitor changes in sea ice. Understanding these changes is critical to protecting U.S. economic and strategic interests, given the more than 1,000 miles of Arctic coastline in Alaska.
