New York - 10 July 2025
1. Various, juvenile ceratosaurus display
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"Behind me I've got a juvenile ceratosaurus. This is one of only four ceratosaurs in the world and the only juvenile. And then we are selling the largest piece of Mars on Earth. This is a massive 54-pound Martian meteorite that landed in the middle of the Sahara Desert."
3. Various, Martian meteorite on display
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"This is one of only four ceratosaurus in the world. The three other examples are in museums. This is not only the only one that is available for purchase, but it's the only juvenile specimen."
5. Wide, juvenile ceratosaurus
6. Tight, skull of a juvenile ceratosaurus
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"And juvenile specimens are really, really important. They're really rare for two reasons. They were very appetizing to adult dinosaurs. You know, nice, tender, young dinosaurs. Much better than an old, you know, stiff dinosaur. But also their bones were really fine and were much less likely to survive the 154 million year fossilization process. So we almost never find juvenile dinosaurs."
8. Medium, juvenile ceratosaurus
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"Looking at the skull, the most distinguishing feature of this dinosaur is the horn on its nose and the horns over the orbital, like the eye sockets."
10. Wide, juvenile ceratosaurus
11. Tight, horn on nose of a juvenile ceratosaurus
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"So this is, the skull is complete. All of the skull was there and about half of the post cranial skeleton is also there."
13. Tilt, down from the skull of the juvenile ceratosaurus to its body
14. Close, pelvis
15. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"But we remarkably have the full pelvis and one full leg."
16. Tilt up from a reflection of the Mars meteorite
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"This Martian meteorite is the largest piece of Mars we have ever found by a long shot. So it's more than double the size of what we previously thought was the largest piece of Mars. And we've only taken a small piece of it to study, to confirm that it was Martian, but there's all sorts of interesting data that can be found inside of this rock."
18. Medium, Martian meteorite on display
19. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"We know that it was ejected from the red planet, likely from a massive asteroid strike."
20. Tight, Martian meteorite
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"This incredible juvenile ceratosaurus and the largest piece of Mars are both being auctioned here at Sotheby's in New York on July 16th, starting at 10 a.m.."
22. Medium, Martian meteorite
23. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman, Science & Natural History, Sotheby’s:
"The estimate on the juvenile ceratosaurus is $4 to $6 million. On the Martian meteorite, it's $2 to $4 million. We are going to find out together what they're worth because nothing like either of these has ever sold before."
24. Tight, Martian meteorite
