Overcoming mental blocks can be one of the biggest challenges any creative person faces. In this video, I not only share some ways that you can deal with these blocks, but also the surprising benefit of doubt.
Often, when we think about doing something bold, we suddenly start to have controlling or constricting thoughts that don't feel that great.
“Do I have what it takes to have the career I want?”
“Do I know enough to run my own business?”
All of these thoughts are mental blocks.
The first thing to understand when overcoming mental blocks is the difference between a mental block and a truth. I find it useful to imagine these negative questions as threshold guardians.
Threshold guardians are an important part of the hero's journey. The hero will always encounter them. For example, there could be a character who really wants to do something but may not want to leave their home. This is where we can begin to see the benefit of doubt.
When imagining doubt as a threshold guardian, we see that these mental blocks are not a sign that something is broken in us. In fact, the threshold guardian is a crucial component of the journey. It’s role is to test the hero.
It can also be useful to imagine the version of you who has already succeeded at overcoming mental blocks. Who is that person on the other side? How do they respond to these doubts?
When you can answer that, you can give yourself a path forward. That’s the hidden benefit of doubt.
A mental block is not a truth; rather, it’s simply training for the next stage in your journey.
