Following the vandalism in Parbhani, the police began arresting people involved in the protests. However, how these arrests were carried out has raised numerous questions.
The police conducted combing operations in Dalit-Bahujan basti across Parbhani, subjecting women and young men to brutal treatment. It has been alleged by Ambedkarite activists that people who had no direct involvement in the protest were beaten with lathis and arrested by the police.
On Sunday, December 15, a young man named Somnath Suryawanshi died in a Parbhani jail. Somnath was studying for his LLB degree and had come to Parbhani to visit his family.
However, the police arrested him along with more than 40 others following the violence on December 11. On December 15, Somnath died in custody. This death has raised serious questions about the police's actions. Who is responsible for the combing operation and the death of Somnath Suryawanshi?
