How To Be A Bartender - What is a Martini?

Hi. I’m Damian, Bartender over at Liquid Kitty in West LA California and I’m here to tell you a little bit about Martini.

It’s traditional old drink, it’s been around for couple hundred years wherever you go, you gonna get different bartenders tell you different story about what a Martini really is and none of them are wrong, none of them is absolutely right either. Interesting thing about the Martini is that, it started as a Gin based drink you know which traditionally two thirds Gin and one for vermouth, dry vermouth, often times they would put dash bitters in it but it was develop couple hundred years ago as a cure for stomach ache or a headache or any kind of illness you might have had so often times a dash of bitters just put the martini, over the years the bitterness is gone away, I don’t know nowadays uses bitter in Martini unless it’s some kind of crafty cocktail place with mixologist to demands to do it but even that is very rare, over the course of time Gin is fallen out of favor a little bit and vodkas taken over and I think my opinion is that in the fifties when people go out for their liquid lunches they two martini lunch and when their back at the office you can literally smell Gin not only in their breath but their pores, vodka’s more cleaner drink it was easier drink in mask so the Martini went from Gin and slowly transfer to vodka, nowadays in most bars you gonna find out, find that it is primarily a vodka drink. Here at Liquid Kitty our main drink is a vodka martini, so people come in orders a martini I ask them a little bit questions, do you want vodka? Do you want Gin, Do you want straight up?
