Today marks 39-years since the death of Pan Africanist Congress's founding member, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. Sobukwe played a vital role in the fight against apartheid and was instrumental in mobilising against the pass laws. After spending six years in solitary confinement on Robben Island, he was put under house arrest in Kimberley, where he died of lung cancer.
