(25 Mar 2022) As the Russian attack on Ukraine marked 30 days, exhausted and frightened Ukrainians continued to travel West to Lviv and into neighboring countries.
Many of them were skeptical at first that a war would happen.
And when it did, many thought it would be only a few days until Russia and Ukraine's leaders reached a peace deal.
One of them was Tetyana Balzhy who was trying to avoid having to move her 85-year-old mother from their home in Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine.
"We thought it would all be over soon. I was afraid how the mother would endure the road, after all, she is 85-years-old. But the last multiple rockets flew ... I said: "That's it, I can't do it anymore," she said.
Without heating, water or electricity life was unbearable, forcing her and her family to move West.
"This is not life. This is just hell."
They are not sure yet what their final destination will be.
On the same train from Dnipro that brought her to Lviv were Ukrainian men in uniforms.
They were coming for military training before being deployed to defend the east again.
The International Organization for Migration says that more than 6.5 million people have been internally displaced in Ukraine since the war started exactly one month ago.
More than 3.6 million people have also fled Ukraine, according to the United Nations, the biggest movement of people in Europe since World War II.
Most believed they would soon be back home.
That hope is waning now.
